Pollutant emissions
Hydrocarbons
(HC): Collective term for the variety of total
hydrocarbons (THC); some of
which are carcinogenous; some have an unpleasant smell; irritate mucous
membranes; facilitate the formation of ozone.
Carbon
monoxide (CO): colourless and odourless gas; the result of
incomplete combustion (oxidation);
inhibits the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, leading to
death by asphyxiation.
Nitrogen
oxides (NOx): chiefly NO: colourless, odourless and
tasteless
gas; in the atmosphere it slowly converts into NO2; NO2:
reddish-brown toxic gas with a sharp, biting odour; irritates mucous
membranes;
one of the causes of acid rain and smog.
Particulate
matter (PM): these solid particles are the result of
incomplete combustion; consist
mainly of carbon (soot), they may be carcinogenous
